Is it possible to import a Microsoft Word document into Photoshop as a Text Layer?

No - at least not directly. However a simple copy from your Word document and paste into a Photoshop Text (Paragraph) Layer should suffice. Bear in mind it will not retain style or table attributes if any exists in your Word document source.
