Running the PERL Programme

Previous Next

Type in your program using a text editor, and save it. Emacs is a one of the good text editor to use for this because it has its own Perl mode, This mode formats lines nicely when you hit tab (make use of`M-x perl-mode'). You can also use whichever you feel is most comfortable.

After you have entered and saved the program make sure the file is executable by using the following command.

chmod u+x programname

At the UNIX prompt, where the programname is filename of the program. Now to run the program just type any of the following command at the prompt.

perl programname
./programname
programname

If something goes wrong in the program you may get error message, or may get nothing. You can also run the program with warnings using the following command.

perl -w programname

At the prompt. this will display warnings and other helpful messages before trying to execute the program. To run the program with a debugger use the following command

perl -d programname

When executed, Perl first compiles the file and then executes the compiled version. So with short pause for compilation the program should run quite quickly. This tells, why do you get compilation errors when you execute a Perl file which consists only text.

Make sure that your program will work before proceeding. The program's output sometimes may be slightly unexpect.
