ADO Add

Previoushome Next

In ADO Add object is used for add the data or record to the table in a database.We may use the SQL command INSERT INTO for adding a record to a table in a database.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Adding

Adding the recordsin the database is much like updateing, except you use AddNew instead of Edit. Let us add one more command button to our application. Let us call it "cmdNew" =). Here is the code that is used for adds a new record.

Private Sub cmdNew_Click()

rsMyRS.AddNew
rsMyRS!Name = "A New Person"
lstRecords.AddItem rsMyRS!Name
lstRecords.ItemData(lstRecords.NewIndex) = rsMyRS!ID
rsMyRS!Phone = "Person's Phone Number"
rsMyRS.Update

End Sub

Explanation:

The AddNew method takes a set of new boxes and adding the record to our RecordSet. We then put some other new values in them and close the lids with Update. As you can see we never stated any valu e for "ID", but as you remember, this is a field of type "Counter" wich automatically gets a unique value. The code also adds this new record to the list box so that you will be able to change the phone number of this person.

Add a Record to a Table in a Database

If we need to add a new record to the Employee table in the dataone database. We first create a form that contains the fields we want to collect data from:

<html>
<body>

<form method="post" action="demo_add.asp">
<table>
<tr>
<td>emloyeeID:</td>
<td><input name="empid"></td>
</tr><tr>
<td>Company Name:</td>
<td><input name="compname"></td>
</tr><tr>
<td>Contact Name:</td>
<td><input name="contname"></td>
</tr><tr>
<td>Address:</td>
<td><input name="address"></td>
</tr><tr>
<td>City:</td>
<td><input name="city"></td>
</tr><tr>
<td>Postal Code:</td>
<td><input name="postcode"></td>
</tr><tr>
<td>Country:</td>
<td><input name="country"></td>
</tr>
</table>
<br /><br />
<input type="submit" value="Add New">
<input type="reset" value="Cancel">
</form>

</body>
</html>

When the user presses the submit button the form is sent to a file called "demo_add.asp". The "demo_add.asp" file contains the code that will adding a new record to the Employee table:

<html>
<body>

<%

set conn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
conn.Provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0"
conn.Open "c:/empdata/dataone.mdb"
sql="INSERT INTO employee (employeeID,companyname,"
sql=sql & "contactname,address,city,postalcode,country)"
sql=sql & " VALUES "

sql=sql & "('" & Request.Form("empid") & "',"
sql=sql & "'" & Request.Form("compname") & "',"
sql=sql & "'" & Request.Form("contname") & "',"
sql=sql & "'" & Request.Form("address") & "',"
sql=sql & "'" & Request.Form("city") & "',"
sql=sql & "'" & Request.Form("postcode") & "',"
sql=sql & "'" & Request.Form("country") & "')"

on error resume next
conn.Execute sql,recaffected
if err<>0 then
Response.Write("No update permissions!")
else
Response.Write("<h3>" & recaffected & "
record added</h3>")
end if
conn.close
%>

</body>
</html>

Tips with the Sql command:

You allways care when SQL INSERT command will be used.

If the table contains the primary key, that make sure to append a unique, non-Null value to the primary key field.

If any table contains an AutoNumber field, don't include this field in the SQL INSERT command (the value of this field will be taken care of automatically by the provider).
